Garbage Recycling Program

Aim of the Project

More efforts are being made to improve the Solid Waste Management scenario in Indian Cities by following recycling and scientific disposal of the garbage. Generally, we dump the garbage to an open space or in the municipal masonry bins and sometime major chunk of the garabge ends up in empty lots, parks, along railway lines, roads, motorways, etc… garbage is also dumped into rain and wastewater ditches, resulting from large scale clogging and overflowing of these ditches. The garbage heaps as well as associated stagnant water cause disease vectors like flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, rats, etc… to proliferate and thereby constitute a serious threat to public health. Therefore, there is a need to develop an integrated approach, based on recycling to address these problems and form an environmentally sound strategy for its application.

We all know that Indian cities are suffering from a low standard of services in respect of collection, and disposal of municipal waste. The present level of services in some of the metropolitan cities of India is a potential threat to the community’s health and environment.

This project has provided the end of pipeline solution to the solid waste generated in various residential colonies, corporate, educational institutes, malls and hotels. The project goals were thus articulated in the 3 R strategies – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle with the specific emphasis on the segregation of waste at source.

Brief description of each component of the program:

Waste Collection

IPCA has deputed a trained team of waste collectors to collect the garbage from household, corporate, educational institutes, malls, markets, hotels, etc.. The waste collectors wear uniform and identity card issued by the IPCA.

Waste Transportation

Waste is transported to the designated site for further segregation through tricycle, and the segregated organic waste will then be transported to Vermicomposting Site for an end of pipe solution to the organic waste.

Waste Segregation

The most important task in the whole system is to get waste segregated at the source. For this purpose, our project team is given special training. They will segregation the waste at a designated site.

At Designated Site- The site receives two kinds of waste viz. bio-degradable and non-biodegradable. The non-biodegradable component is consisted of different kinds of materials such as plastic, papers, metal, cardboard, etc., which are then segregated into each kind of material, which is then bagged and store for recycling.

Waste Recycling

IPCA has tied up with a number of units from recycling industries for recycling of segregated recyclable components of the garbage.

Biodegradable organic waste Recycling

IPCA has its own vermicomposting plant at Delhi NCR and Noida for conversion of bio-degradable organic waste into vermicompost (organic manure). Vermicomposting is a bio-oxidation process of organic materials and involves a joint action of earthworms and micro-organisms. Earthworms (Easinea foetida) breakdown organic wastes into a stable non-toxic material with good structure, which has a potentially high economic value for its use as soil conditioner and manure for plant growth. Participation of inoculated earthworms in vermicomposting accelerate the process by enhancing both quality and quantity within shortened duration. Thus, vermicomposting has many other advantages, especially in ecological terms.

Plastic Recycling

With rapid urbanization, use of plastic is increasing day by day and its composition in our waste is also increasing tremendously. Therefore, its recycling is very much required to get rid off the problem of waste disposal and subsequent environment degradation. Waste plastic is recycled into various products. For example PET is recycled into Textile fiber.

Paper Recycling

Waste paper if properly segregated from the municipal solid waste, then it can be recycled back to paper with the help of our recycling partners. The recycled paper is used for the manufacturing of products like carry bags, note book, folders, cards etc.

Tetra Pak Packaging Recycling

IPCA in association with Tetra Pak India Ltd. started a campaign to recycle Tetra Pak packaging material and tied up with Khateema Fibers, Uttrakhand for recycling of Tetra Pak packaging material.

Waste Lubricant Oil Recycling

Disposal of any form of oil into the drain or landfill is strictly prohibited by Central Pollution Control Board and it is recommended to handover the waste oil to the authorized recyclers only.

E-waste Recycling

With rapid urbanization in our country E-Waste Management has become a real challenge. Today, we are using a number of electronic goods to make our life easy, e.g. computer, mobile, CFL, printers, air-conditioner, refrigerator, etc. Disposal of these wastes should be avoided to open space or landfill because all this electronic good contains heavy metals, which are toxic in nature and cause diseases like cancer. Therefore, we should try to store it separately and handover to the agency, who can repair and recycle it as per CPCB guidelines.

Advantage of the project

The silent benefits of the recycling are as follows:

Through 3Rs system of Solid waste we can prevent and conserve our depleting resources of energy.

Open dumping of the garbage will be stpped.

The waste will be recycled and reuse. Thus we can further save our natural resources.

We can make our environment more hygienic, clean and green.

The project can support low-income group in making their lives more sustainable.
