Richmond Park, Hamilton Court, Tetra Pak India Pvt. Ltd., Coca Cola India Pvt.Ltd., Indian Pollution Control Association and Parkash Environment Group with the media partner Hindustan Times Ltd. The project was launched on 1 December 2013 at DLF Phase IV, Gurgaon. The Project aimed to encourage and initiate the practices of source segregation of household waste and channelize segregated waste for recycling. As part of the project, ‘Twin bins system’ was promoted at household level forsegregating wet and dry waste.

Objectives

• To foster community participation for source segregation of waste
•  To create a feeling of ownership among people with regards to their waste
•  To reduce pressure on landfill sites and reduce cost of transportation
•  To increase the per capita income of rag pickers and improve their
  health.

The project was implemented in DLF Phase IV which is spread across 246.56 acres area. 1296 dwellings of high income group population, 330 dwellings of economically weaker section, four market complexes, a city club, and one Senior Secondary School (Sri Ram Public School) were covered under the project.

Project Activities & Training

Training sessions on source segregation were organized for residents of the area and their domestic helpers. The message was also spread in schools, shopping malls and complexes. Senior citizens and youth were encouraged to become volunteers and create campaigns for door- to- door awareness.Training was also provided to waste collectors and people working in the waste collection centres on source segregation and use of equipments.

Setting up of Dry Waste Collection Center

Adequate infrastructure for efficient waste management was also installed in the area of operation. Workers of the centre ensured proper storage of the segregated waste. To reduce workload of workers and to save cost on storage and transportation, Vertical Hydraulic Balers were installed at the centre. Linking waste collectors to the recyclers- As part of the project, waste collectors were directly linked to the recyclers. This helped them in received more value for their collected waste material. As a result, their per capita income also increased. The project was successful in imbibing the habit of source segregation amongst people. It was also found that the project helped waste collectors to increase their income by 85%.
